EAEU: Consumers will be informed on the plant fat content in dairy products

The EurAsian Commission Collegiate has set the transitional period for the amendments to the Technical Regulation on the Safety of Milk and Dairy Products. These amendments were adopted on 10 November 2017 and enter into force on 16 July 2018.

The amendments to the Technical Regulation on milk and dairy products clarified and supplemented milk and dairy product classification.

The amendments will allow consumers to clearly distinguish between products with the addition of a milk fat substitute. If products contain such substitute, their name on the label must be preceded by the words “Milk-containing product with milk fat substitute”.

The manufacturer must specify the information on the content of plant oils and fats (such as palm oil) in a milk-containing product. In particular, the manufacturer must mark the product label with the words “Contains plant fats/oils”. The font of this text must be clearly visible against the background.

The transitional period set out that until 16 January 2019 manufacturers are able to produce dairy and milk products if they have conformity assessment documents issued before the amendments to the TR on milk and dairy products entered into force. Products manufactured and placed on the market during the validity period of these conformity assessment documents can remain on the market during its normal shelf life.
