EEU: Hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products will be restricted

On 4 August 2016 the text of the draft Technical Regulation (TR) on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment has been published. The text is in line with the European Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2).  The provisions of the TR would apply to the whole EEU: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.

When adopted the draft TR would apply to a wide range of electrical and electronic equipment, including domestic appliances (intended for cooking, ironing, etc.), office equipment (printers, monitors, keyboards, laptops, servers, etc.), cables, extension cables, electronic watch and toys, batteries and accumulators, medical devices, solar panels, telephony products, etc.

The TR would restrict the concentration of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. These substances are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

The date when the EEU RoHS is expected to enter into force is 18 March 2018. However, the exact enforcement plan and the procedure for its entry into force is to be decided in November by the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission.
