Russia: new safety standard for lifts enters into force

Federal Agency on Technical Regulation and Metrology has signed the Order on the application of the national intra-state standard GOST 33984.1-2016 “Lifts. General safety requirements for the design and installation of lifts. Lifts intended for persons or persons and cargo.”

The adopted standard contains the most updated requirements for the safety of lifts, including requirements set out by the European Union standards.

The standard regulating safety of lifts that is currently in force in Russia is the national Russian standard GOST R 53780-2010 “Lifts. General safety requirements for the design and installation” that was aligned with the European standards of 1998.

The adopted standard is based on the EU standard EN 81-20:2014 entering into force in the EU as of 1 September 2014. This is one of the examples when a national Russian standard enters into force almost at the same time as the corresponding European standard.

The standard provides for a transitional period which is necessary both form the manufacturers and for any involved notified bodies.
