EAEU: Amendments to the Technical Regulations on food labelling entered into force

On 28 April 2019, changes to the technical regulation of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) on food labelling, adopted by the EAEC Council, entered into force. 

As noted by the Department of Technical Regulation and Accreditation of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EAEC), the purpose of adopting these changes in is to clarify the labelling requirements for food ensuring readability and clear perception of information on consumer packages. As a result of introducing these changes the consumers will be able to make informed and accurate purchasing decisions.

The changes, in particular, clarified the criteria for the concepts of “easy readability” and “clarity” and defined the requirements for the height of the font in which certain information is to be written on food label.  For example, product name, quantity, date of manufacture and “use by” date must be written in a font with a minimum 2mm height. Product composition, storage conditions, name and location of the manufacturer and some other information – in a font that is at least 0.8 mm high.

The changes also introduced requirements for placing information on the trade name of a food product on packaging.

A transitional period of 24 months is set for implementing these requirements.
