Russia adopts safety requirements for Gaseous Tritium Light Source (GTLS)

Organisations manufacturing or using GTLS and products containing GTLS in Russia must comply, as of 25 April 2015, with the adopted sanitary rules (SanPiN  2.6.1.3239-14).

The adopted sanitary rules contain requirements pertaining to the occupational health and safety of workers manufacturing or using GTLS or products made on the basis of GTLS as well as safety requirements pertaining to the design and construction of GTLS and to the manufacturing process, design, construction and packaging of GTLS.

The rules also contain requirements applicable to the safe transportation and storage of GTLS, including the emergency response procedure.

Tritium light sources are used in a number of products, including emergency exit signs, wrist watches, compasses, etc. Because GLTS contain the radioactive substance tritium and are considered "sealed sources of ionising radiation", manufacture and placing of these products on the market, is regulated.
